Advantages of PFA as an Insulation Material for Wires and Cables

The selection of insulation materials is directly related to the performance and service life of wires and cables. Among many insulation materials, fluoroplastics have gradually replaced traditional insulation materials such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride due to their unique performance advantages.

The main fluoroplastics widely used in the wire and cable industry include:

Ø Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

Ø Fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP)

Ø Perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA)

This article discusses in detail the advantages of fluoroplastics as wire insulation materials over traditional ones.

① Flame Retardancy

Fluoroplastic wires and cables have far better flame retardancy than traditional insulation materials, mainly due to their high limiting oxygen index (LOI). The higher the LOI, the more difficult the material is to burn. Materials with an LOI below 22% are generally considered flammable, while fluoroplastics mostly exceed this standard and are classified as non-flammable.

② Heat Resistance

In the molecular structure of fluoroplastics, the covalent bonds between fluorine and carbon atoms are extremely strong, providing ultra-high stability to the entire molecular chain. This stability allows fluoroplastics to retain their original physical and chemical properties in high-temperature environments without thermal cracking or oxidation.

Field applications have fully validated the heat resistance of fluoroplastic-insulated wires. Traditional insulation materials such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride soften, deform, or even melt rapidly at high temperatures, causing a sharp drop in insulation performance. In contrast, fluoroplastic-insulated wires maintain stable insulation under extreme conditions. They can operate normally even above 200℃ without obvious performance degradation.

③ Corrosion Resistance

Fluoroplastics exhibit outstanding corrosion resistance and can withstand the erosion of various chemicals including acids and alkalis. This excellent corrosion resistance enables fluoroplastic-insulated wires to maintain good insulation performance in harsh environments and extend cable service life.

④ Electrical Properties

Fluoroplastic-insulated wires feature extremely high insulation resistance and dielectric strength. They effectively prevent current leakage and dielectric breakdown under high voltage, maintaining stable electrical performance.

Fluoroplastics with high dielectric strength retain stable insulation in high-voltage fields, reliably protecting the normal operation of electrical equipment.
